Blair Pond
Blair Pond is a one-acre clay pit dug tucked in a seven-acre reservation. Now part of the DCR’s Alewife Reservation, CP&GC partnered with the small but mighty Friends of Blair Pond and the DCR to develop a plant survey and planting plan for the site.
Cambridge Common
The Cambridge Common is a central component of busy Harvard Square, and its 16 acres are traversed by an estimated 10,000+ pedestrians and cyclists daily. This urban green space is a National Historic Landmark where George Washington took command of the Continental Army.
Craigie Street Park
In 2009, city officials joined with West Cambridge neighbors and CP&GC to dedicate and reopen Craigie Street Park.
Hell’s Half Acre
Since the 1950s, CP&GC has worked to preserve the last remaining piece of marsh in the Charles River Basin, Hell’s Half Acre, which is now 7-1/2 acres of urban wildland administered by the DCR.
Cambridge Committee on Public Planting
In the ’70s, two activist members proposed and established the Cambridge Committee on Public Planting to advise and support the city in improving public planting. Expertise of club members is a significant resource as the City maintains existing public plantings and considers new ones.
CP&GC joined in Lowell Park Memorial Restoration Unveiling
Along with other organizations, CP&GC was instrumental in the completion of a $1.4 million project to restore and improve access at Lowell Memorial Park in Cambridge.
Promoting native plants in partnership with local high school
For a fourth year, Cambridge Plant & Garden Club offered native plants for sale in collaboration with students from the local, public Cambridge high school—Cambridge Rindge & Latin.
Memorial Drive Allée
CP&GC has been an avid advocate for keeping the iconic London Plane trees as the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) plans to refresh a one-mile stretch of Memorial Drive.
Discover Cambridge Pocket Parks
Discover Cambridge Pocket Parks is a publication of the Cambridge Plant & Garden Club in cooperation with the City of Cambridge. For the first time 21 small “pocket parks” scattered through the City of Cambridge are identified and celebrated.
Fresh Pond Reservation
The Fresh Pond Reservation – 162 acres surrounding and protecting Fresh Pond Reservoir – is the largest open space in densely populated Cambridge.
CP&GC Partners with Roxbury Sunflower Project and Prospect Hill Academy
The students at Prospect Hill Academy partnered with CP&GC during the COVID lockdowns. The club looked for novel ways to engage with the community and, specifically, with local students remotely, to inspire in students a closer connection with nature, public spaces, and knowledge of the plant world.
Lower Longfellow Park
CP&GC began advocating for Longfellow Park in 2015 as we had concern about existing trees, planting around the poet’s monument, crumbling stone steps, non-working light posts, and lack of benches.
