Watertown, Cambridge Greenway Ramp

At the busy intersection of Belmont, Mt. Auburn and Holworthy streets, across from Sofra Bakery, there is an important space overlooking the newly built Watertown Cambridge Greenway, a shared-use path. This Greenway is maintained by the DCR but friends groups and residents have worked with the DCR to plant native plants on their own.  CP&GC has done just that, with the assistance of a member who is a part of the neighborhood.

The Greenway could be an important part of a pollinator pathway linking sites like Mt. Auburn Cemetery to Fresh Pond Reservation.

In the spring of 2025, CP&GC planted 150 plugs of Schizachyrium scoparium, Little Bluestem, in this hot and very dry site. The summer drought jeopardized the survival of these plants but dedicated members hauled water over to the spot and hand watered. These plants thrive today.

Our intent is to continue to plant more native plants, creating an ecologically important space that is also beautiful to look at.
